William Mason will be appointed director general of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission on the retirement of Nik van Leuven. Mason (pictured) will join the Commission from the position of Head of Risk at the Central Bank of Ireland, where he has led the development and implementation of its PRISM supervisory methodology. Most recently he has been working with the European Central Bank helping it plan for the Eurozone’s proposed Banking Union. Before that Mason worked for the UK Financial Services Authority, joining shortly before the financial crisis, and led teams supervising a range of credit institutions, insurers and investment
The DE Shaw Group, an investment and technology development firm, has appointed Ángel Ubide and Brian Sack as senior vice presidents and co-directors of global economics in the group’s discretionary macro investing unit.  Max Stone, a managing director and member of the firm’s five-person executive committee, oversees that unit.   “We’re incredibly excited to welcome Ángel and Brian to our team,” says Stone. “Our macro team casts a wide net in terms of asset class and geography, and having these two talented individuals’ insights strengthens our capabilities in several dimensions as we source and analyse trades in global markets.”

KPMG has expanded its alternative investment funds (AIF) practice by adding two federal tax managing directors to its Los Angeles and New York offices. Sir Paul Ruddock is to retire as chief executive officer of Lansdowne Partners, the London-based stock-picking hedge fund he co-founded in 1998, to concentrate on his work in the arts. Ruddock (pictured), who is currently chairman of the Victoria & Albert museum in London, will step down at the end of June. Lansdowne Partners currently has GBP8.2bn of assets under management. Its biggest fund, the GBP5.9bn Developed Markets fund managed by former Merrill Lynch investment managers Stuart Roden and Peter Davies, returned 18 per cent last year and is currently up 7.5 per cent in 2013.
Dillon Eustace has appointed Derbhil O’Riordan as a partner for its recently established Cayman Islands office. O’Riordan (pictured) previously worked at the firm’s Dublin headquarters and will continue to work for its hedge funds practice, servicing both Irish and Cayman funds. O’Riordan joined Dillon Eustace in 2003 and was promoted to partner in 2010. Engaging primarily with the investment fund industry her legal expertise lies in establishing, structuring and ongoing operation of hedge funds, sophisticated Ucits structures and exchange-traded funds. Triton Capital Advisors, a provider of alternative investment services, has opened an office in Boston, Massachusetts. Jeff Garcia, a veteran of the alternative investment industry, will helm the branch. Asset management company Affiliated Managers Group has expanded its European distribution capabilities by opening an office in Zurich, Switzerland. The company has also made two new appointments to its distribution team in Europe. Patrick Sege joins as director, head of distribution, Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein, and will be based in AMG’s new office in Zurich. Sege joins AMG from Liongate Capital Management, where he was head of sales and business development for Switzerland and Continental Europe. In this role, he was responsible for covering all institutional client segments including banks, pension funds, insurance companies, family offices and independent asset managers.
